Earthquakes,volcaniceruptions,landslides,andevenmeteoritesthathitEarthcancausetsunamis.Onceatsunamireachestheshoreline,itsgreatspeedstripsbeachesofsandthatmayhavetakenyearstoform.Asitmovespastthebeachesandontoland,itnotonlydestroyshomesandvegetationbutalsowreakshavoconotherresourcesnecessaryforthesurvivalofman.Thefloodofseawatercontaminatesthedrinkingwatersupply,leavinginhabitantswithoutcleanwatertodrink.Intheblinkofaneye,water,food,andshelterarelost.
Theaftermathofatsunamiisjustasthreatening.Withthedestructionofhomes
Althoughtheworldwasgenerousafterthetsunami,itwilltakemanyyears,perhapsgenerationsbeforethelivesofthevictimsarerebuilt.Wemustneverletthememoryoftheliveslostandthoseitaffectedbeforgotten.
杀人巨浪──海啸
年12月26日，惊涛骇浪顷刻间就吞没了数十万条人命。从那天起，tsunami一词就成为我们日常生活用语的一部分。tsunami是从日语的“津波”（港口巨浪）而来。海啸浪高可达30米，以超过公里的时速横越太平洋，这巨浪会将任何在它行进范围内的东西摧毁。
地震、火山爆发、滑坡，甚至陨石撞击地球都可能引发海啸。一旦扑至海滨，速度极高的海啸会把沿海耗时数年才形成的沙滩卷走。随着海啸冲过海滩到达陆地，它不但摧毁房屋和植被，还大肆破坏其他人类赖以生存的资源。海水涌入，污染了饮用供水，使居民没有干净的水喝。剎那间，饮水、食物、家园都不见了。
海啸的灾后效应一样具有威胁性。随着房屋遭到摧毁，垃圾和排泄物会涌进来，伤寒、霍乱和疟疾等疾病会迅速蔓延。对那些逃过海啸的生还者而言，之后数天到数周的日子同样危机重重。
虽然国际间在海啸灾后均慷慨解囊，但可能还是要耗费许多年，甚至好几代的时间受灾者的生活才能完全重建。我们决不可忘记海啸带来的伤亡和破坏。
